Beer passes thirst base
BOROBI will be drinking XXXX at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
But mystery surrounds whether brewery giant Lion will make a special Games edition beer similar to the legendary super strength 1982 brew at the Brisbane Commonwealth Games.
The Bulletin yesterday previewed the deal and pushed for either a commemorative series of cans and possibly new beer to celebrate next April’s biggest-ever Queensland sporting event.
When announcing the deal yesterday, GOLDOC chairman Peter Beattie was asked if XXXX might consider a “Boro beer” named after Games mascot Borobi.
Both the organisers and the brewers know they are on to a winner with memorabilia and will reach a decision in the next few months.
“As far as I know Borobi was up until now a teetotaller,” Mr Beattie said. Beer giant backs Coast Games, now like Brisbane ‘82, give us our own special brew our plans,” Mr Slocombe told the Bulletin.
“It’s amazing the interest in what we’ve done in 1982. And we’re taking that inspiration to work out the best way of supporting the Queensland community in 2018.”
Mr Beattie described a sponsorship deal with XXXX as “the best mix” for the event and after several months of negotiations clinching it was “a dream made in heaven”.
At a function at the Q1 Observation Deck in Surfers Paradise yesterday, XXXX became the 50th sponsor for the event.
Asked if he drank much of the Games XXXX special lager during the 1982 Games, Mr Beattie was reluctant to share his memories with the popular super strength beer.
“I was much younger then and I’m not prepared to discuss my drinking habits,” he grinned.
“But you can rest assured I’m very familiar with XXXX and have been all my life. Even before it was legal. That’s not a good thing to say, is it.”
