Shy guys urged to join Comm Games fun

- KATHLEEN SKENE

GOLD Coast guys aren’t renowned for their shyness – but a shortage of blokes willing to put on a show has Commonwealth Games organisers worried.

More than 4000 volunteers are needed to perform in the opening and closing ceremonies in April, with applications closing at midnight on Sunday.

While plenty of women have put up their jazz hands to join the party – the guys have been more reluctant, prompting chairman Peter Beattie to appeal for them to have a go.

“All you need is enthusiasm,” he said.

“We need 4000 people and we haven’t met our target.

“If you believe you have a talent you want to share with 1.5 billion people, here’s your chance.”

Mr Beattie said living on the Gold Coast would be an advantage as performers would have to attend rehearsals here.

“Unfortunately not enough men have applied – I guess men are a little shy,” he said.

“We do have men who’ve applied, but we want more.

“The male surf lifesavers we’ve engaged are fantastic – some of them have moves that I can only dream of.

“You don’t have to have any experience, you’ll be trained.”

Rehearsals begin in midJanuary 2018, with successful applicants required to commit to a minimum of two rehearsals a week, building up to three-four rehearsals in the weeks leading up to the Opening Ceremony.
