CELEBRITIE­S ANSWER CALL TO HELP HURRICANE VICTIMS

HOLLYWOOD celebritie­s have hit the phones at a live telethon to raise funds for the survivors and victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matdead thew McConaughe­y, Tom Hanks, Beyonce and Justin Bieber came together at the “Hand in Hand” telethon.

The hour-long telethon aired from New York, Nashville and Los Angeles from where it was broadcast across cable and digital platforms, raising more than $US14 million ($A17.5 million).

Beyonce spoke of the urgent need for supplies in her home town of Houston after more than 60 people were killed and some 203,000 homes damaged when Hurricane Harvey hit Texas.

Residents of the Florida Keys ravaged by Hurricane Irma, which has left at least 12 statewide, discovered scenes of desolation as they returned home yesterday amid a huge operation to restore electricit­y to millions of people. Irma has now killed at least 50 across the Caribbean and US.
