VERY strange to be at the announcement of the Josephine Ulrick/ Win Schubert Photographic Award and realise that for the first time Mrs Schubert would not be there. The photographic award, the richest in Australia which Win funded in perpetuity, is a fitting testament to her devotion to the arts. This year’s winner is Penny Borland. The exhibition runs until October 22. Emily Dickinson wrote: ‘Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul.’ I mention this because you may be closing yourself off to an idea that wants to take flight. It makes sense that you want to guard against disappointment. But turning away from opportunity won’t improve things. That feeling of being stuck in the mud doesn’t have to be how you continue.
