Charges over siege

A MAN has been charged af­ter a 10-hour siege which caused the heart of Surfers Par­adise to be put into lock­down on Fri­day night.

Swarms of po­lice blocked The Es­planade be­tween Lay­cock and Clif­ford Sts af­ter the 32-year-old al­legedly started throw­ing items off a bal­cony, threat­en­ing to harm him­self and yelling at po­lice to shoot him.

He al­legedly caused se­ri­ous dam­age to the apart­ment in­clud­ing blood smeared on the floor and items de­stroyed. The siege started at 6pm and was re­solved just af­ter 5am.

The man has been charged with one count of as­sault oc­ca­sion­ing bod­ily harm, se­ri­ous as­sault, com­mon nui­sance, fail to ap­pear in ac­cor­dance of un­der­tak­ing and two counts of wil­ful dam­age. He will ap­pear at South­port Mag­is­trates Court to­day.
