Guy eyes new base

BRYAN Guy’s property is on the market but the respected trainer says he won’t be leaving the Gold Coast anytime soon.

Guy’s Bundall base – located just 500m from the Gold Coast Turf Club – is under offer with a buyer and could be sold by November.

Another interested party is eager to put in an offer should the original deal fall through.

Guy has been on the Gold Coast for the past 18 years and has a training partnership with son Daniel.

Guy said he would stay on the Gold Coast and buy new stables or move into the turf club’s Traintech facility, which is near the racecourse.

He never considered leaving the city to train elsewhere.

“I’ll still be here at the Coast,” Guy said. “I’ll find another spot somewhere.

“The club is building stables so I’ll probably talk to them.

“It just depends on what happens here.

“If they don’t front the money, I’ll just stay here.

“We are pretty settled on the Gold Coast, I’ve been here for about 18 years now.”

Guy doesn’t expect any potential move from his current house and stables to happen until the new year. Land surrounding the Gold Coast Turf Club precinct is at a premium and developers have been buying up big to build apartments.

Guy’s property is in the hot spot and the experienced trainer said he could see the interest coming.

“They are building all around the place here so it was just a matter of time,” he said.

The pressure on local trainers and their properties is the driving force behind the turf club’s plans to launch a $4 million redevelopment of its training and stable facility.

The club aims to nearly triple the presence of horses at the Traintech complex.

It has 12 years to run on its lease at Traintech but expects to significantly cut the cost – it stands at $170,000 a year now – in the new 50-year term.
