Cafe to the stars in hunt for new home

- EMILY SELLECK AND ANDREW POTTS

ONE of the Gold Coast’s most iconic cafes has been forced out of its Broadbeach location to make way for a 27storey highrise.

Elk Espresso, which has attracted a legion of fans including Orlando Bloom and Margot Robbie, is on the hunt for a new location.

The popular cafe on Chelsea Ave is set to be replaced by a proposed 27-storey tower put forward by developer Morris Property Group.

A development application was lodged with the Gold Coast City Council in February and approved midyear.

Owner Andrew Whiting said he had been given plenty of notice about the move, but could not yet confirm where the cafe would be relocating.

“When we signed the lease we knew there was a chance we’d have to move one day,” he said.

“We need a larger space as we have a waitlist practically everyday to get a table, so the new and improved Elk will have more seating (and) two espresso machines for faster service.

“We will still have the same ethos of seasonal creative menus, friendly table service (and) killer specialty coffee.

“Elk will still be your home

away from home – just reinvented.

“My wife and I are excited and our team are very supportive and excited too about the next season and creating a place for all Gold Coasters to enjoy.”

According to application documents, the tower would be built on the 1214 sqm Chelsea Ave site and will feature 113 units which will include a mixture of residential and short-term accommodation.

Of the 27 levels, 25 would feature units while there will be a ground-floor foyer.

The 27-storey tower will feature a four-bedroom penthouse which will have its own pool and balcony areas.
