Lazy Aussie blokes fail at chores
AUSSIE-BORN blokes are the laziest, helping out the least around the home compared with men born overseas.
Men born here do an average of 13 hours less housekeeping a week compared with their partners.
Those born overseas are far more likely to lend a helping hand with spring cleaning and other chores, according to new research by the University of Queensland.
Men with an Englishspeaking background who migrated to Australia do nearly two hours more cleaning a week than those born here.
Women with an Aussieborn beau do triple the amount of weekly chores, completing 19 hours of work around the house, while their partner manages only six.
Dr Francisco Perales, who conducted the research at the university’s Life Course Centre, said he was surprised by the findings. “Housework is defined as preparing meals, washing dishes and doing the laundry … it doesn’t even include childcare,” he said.
While the results were difficult to explain, Dr Perales said it could be due to Australianborn men sticking to tradition.
“It seems to be more of a cultural difference than anything else,” he said. “Migrants selected to enter Australia are often highly educated.”
