HEAT SHOWSTOPPER

-

THIS Saturday marks the 35th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games.

One of the highlights of these Games was the dead heat that shocked the world. A capacity QEII Stadium witnessed Scot Allan Wells and England’s Michael McFarlane share the gold medal in the men’s 200m athletics final.

Wells and McFarlane crossed the line in 20.43 seconds, and after 25 minutes of deliberation, event officials called it a dead heat.

This remains the only time sprinters have shared gold at a major championship in athletics.
