First look inside the Games Village

The $550m Commonweal­th Games Athletes Village is nearing completion. Grocon, which began work on the 14ha site two years ago, is now onto finishing touches of 1170 apartments and 82 townhouses, which will eventually be part of the Health and Knowledge Precinct. The few workers still on site are mostly cleaners doing a final brush up before it is temporaril­y handed early next month to GOLDOC.

Australian Idol star faces drug charges

Troubled pop star Kate DeAraugo faces up to 15 years in jail on drugs and weapons charges. The singer has faced court in Shepparton, Victoria, after allegedly being found in possession of methamphet­amine, also known as ice. DeAraugo, 31, who won Australian Idol in 2005 before joining the Young Divas group, has spoken of her mental health and addiction battles.

HyperCoast­er stalled after power outage

People on Movie World’s HyperCoast­er were briefly stranded on the top of the ride after a power outage. The outage is believed to have affected the theme park as well as 462 homes in Helensvale as part of a larger blackout. A spokesman said the rollercoas­ter ride had stopped on Monday afternoon for about 10 minutes.

Puppy strapped to top of speeding car

Hot sun, 100km/h speeds and excessive noise. These were the conditions a puppy was subjected to over the weekend when it was spotted in an open cage strapped to a car’s roof barrelling down the Bruce Hwy towards Gympie. The RSPCA is trying to identify the driver of the car, which was seen on Friday and Saturday between Gin Gin and Maryboroug­h and may have driven through Gympie on its way south. According to a witness who posted online, the puppy looked to be terrified.
