THE gloves were off and the claws came out at the Cat Carnival’s cosplay parade.

Yesterday cat lovers and cosplay wearers came together at the Carrara Markets to showcase the best kitty costumes as part of the feline-only event.

Dressed in an anime-style cat costume based on Yo-kai Watch character Jibanyan, Rochelle Nightingale of Helensvale took out first place.

“It’s my first cosplay costume. At the conventions everyone says to enter, but I never did,” Ms Nightingale said. “It took me two weeks to make, I sowed my own costume. I plan to do more cat cosplay in the future.”

Tameka Nuffer, 22, who came third with her “rock star” kitty costume, said she had four cats at home and absolutely loved them.

Event organiser Mia Lee said the weekend carnival had been a great success with stall holders scrambling to restock yesterday after selling out the day before.

“It’s probably exceeded expectations,” she said.

“There’s definitely people from outside the Gold Coast ... the adoptable cats are being adopted out (and) the cat breeders are over the moon.”

Ms Lee said they had thousands of people through the gates and the Cat Carnival would “definitely” be back next year.

Marie Mahoney, who breeds Siberian Forest Cats, said she would be back in 2018. “It’s been fantastic, just amazing ... it’s been huge,” she said.
