POETRY SLAM

-

VARSITY College has hosted an inter-school poetry slam with Miami State High, Robina State High and Palm Beach Currumbin (PBC).

To start off the slam, Emerald Brewer of the Kombumerri people introduced the slam with a Welcome to the Country speech.

Emerald’s cousin Max Dillon played the didgeridoo followed by a recitation of an original poem by Kupae, Kombumerri People.

The poems varied between different emotions from happy to sad and everything in between.

The emotions presented in the senior competition were serious, unhappy and at times humorous. The poets wrote poems that represented themselves and by the end of the senior slam, there wasn’t a dry eye in the audience.

The winners of the senior poetry slam were Kirra McGarrigle (pictured) of Robina SHS and Shavonne Jones of Varsity College.

The winners of both categories — junior and senior — then competed in the grand slam with both senior students taking out the top spot.

The teacher slam was a voluntary competition in which teachers could enter and recite original poems and the winners of that were Andy Tonkin of Miami SHS and Mark Buzolic of Varsity College.
