Kevvie to carry on as Maroons boss

- TRAVIS MEYN

THE Maroons juggernaut is set to continue with Kevin Walters to coach Queensland until at least 2020.

Walters and the Queensland Rugby League have agreed to a two-year extension for him to remain at the helm of the State of Origin team.

Walters, victorious in his first two series as Mal Meninga’s successor, was contracted for 2018 and the new deal will see him stay in control of the Maroons for at least five years.

The contract will be ratified at a QRL board meeting on Friday – Walters’ 50th birthday – before paperwork is finalised in the coming weeks.

The extension formally rules Walters out of contention for the vacant Gold Coast Titans head coach position which he was linked to following the sacking of Neil Henry. “I am staying,” Walters said. “We’ve had some discussions around it all.

“I’m sure something (formal) will happen in the next couple of weeks. I’m pretty happy with that. It will be another good couple of years for us. I’m excited and challenged about working with the next generation of Maroons.”

Walters stepped into the Origin hot seat last year following Meninga’s dynasty which saw Queensland win nine of 10 series.
