Publisher hit for six
CRICKET superstar Chris Gayle yesterday likened his defamation court victory to scoring a matchwinning triple century – but he may yet have to pad up again for a second innings.
The big-hitting batsman was triumphant after a fourperson jury in the NSW Supreme Court found he had been defamed with malice by a series of Fairfax news stories claiming he exposed himself to a female team masseur in a dressing room.
“Yes that was a triple century – no, no, no,” the champion West Indies opener said, referring to three separate questions arising from the articles found to be untrue.
Gayle declared: “I’m a good man. I came this far, all the way from Jamaica, to actually defend myself, my name and my character as well.
“At the end of the day, I am very, very happy.”
But the court battle may not be over with Fairfax releasing a statement saying that the company did not receive a fair trial and was considering appealing.
