Hanson insists: I’m not a Brit

- TRENTON AKERS

PAULINE Hanson has been forced to fend off questions surrounding her citizenship, after concerns emerged she may be a British dual citizen.

While the Senator said she had not officially checked her status, she maintained she held only Australian citizenship as both of her parents were born in the country, with her grandparents born overseas.

“No, I am not eligible for British citizenship. Many years ago that was if your grandparents were born in England, but they actually stopped that,” she said. “I can assure everyone I am not eligible for British citizenship.”

Senator Hanson said she was happy to provide the required paperwork.

Meanwhile, the Turnbull government is refusing to refer Liberal MP John Alexander to the High Court over his potential dual citizenship.

It is understood Labor does not have the numbers to refer Mr Alexander to the court over a potential British citizenship passed down by his father.

If a court finds the former tennis legend ineligible, the government will face a tough by-election in the Sydney seat of Bennelong, which Labor won off former prime minister John Howard in 2007
