GOLD COAST TEST FOR DIVING’S ‘WILD BEAST’
THEY’RE diving’s “wild beast” – a rising star and a proven platform performer – and if they can be tamed, there’s gold on the horizon for Australia at the Commonwealth Games.
Australia’s newest synchronised diving partnership of Matthew Carter and Domonic Bedggood has been brought together by coaches hoping the pair can forge a partnership that will drive them to success at next April’s Gold Coast Games and beyond to the Tokyo Olympics.
Gold Coaster Bedggood is a Commonwealth Games and world championship medallist on the 10m platform who has added the 3m springboard to his repertoire for the Commonwealth Games.
He will partner with Matthew Carter, the teen springboard whiz who finished fifth alongside Esther Qin at the world championships this year, as Australia looks to create a team for the future.
“It’s very new. I think it’s going really well. I think even the coaches see some raw potential there in the grouping,” Bedggood said of the pairing.
“I think they just grabbed it like a wild beast that they need to tame.
“This is Carter’s niche, he’s very talented on this board, has such raw power.”
Bedggood may be the “big brother” but as the springboard specialist, Carter is a leading voice as the Gold Coaster continues his springboard education.
Carter will compete in the men’s 3m springboard preliminaries in this morning’s first session at the FINA Diving Grand Prix at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre
The pair will compete in the 3m synchro on Saturday morning, with Bedggood in action in the individual men’s platform on Sunday.
