HEY Google, who is the best Gold Coast breakfast radio announcer?

This is probably one of the first questions 102.9 Hot Tomato’s Christo asked his Google Home smart speaker when he got it a couple of months ago.

Since then he and his family have asked the hi-tech gadget all sorts of questions from solving maths and space conundrums to how to cook certain dishes – all of which were answered promptly by Google Home.

“It is like having a personal assistant in your house,” Christo said.

“And it is hands free ... you don’t have to look at your phone screen.”

The Google Home smart speaker (RRP $199) can be yours when you sign-up as a new Gold Coast Bulletin 12month digital member.

The Robina-based radio host, who is one third of the Flan & Emily Jade with Christo show, said while his wife Sarah was a bit weary of the device, his two eldest children Noa, 4 and Lila, 7, were big fans.

And his youngest child Jessie, 2, was keen to master how to make the Google Home work but hadn’t quite got the hang of it.

“My kids want to hear it talk to them,” Christo said.

“It is good entertainment for the kids (and adults).

“I had a couple of mates test it out, asking (not GRated) questions.

“But it won’t swear – sensors itself.

“Which is good when you have kids around.”

Christo said he didn’t believe it his Google Home would end up shoved in the back of a cupboard after a few months.

“... Because it is new a lot of people are interested in it – people are sitting around testing it,” he said.

“But I think it is something we will continue to use.”

As well as answering questions, the device – which connects to your home through your Wi-Fi internet – can also read out the latest headlines from the Gold Coast Bulletin, tell you the weather forecast, play your music, set alarms, read recipes and much more.
