ABOUT TIME WE START TO BUST THESE TILAPIA

-

LAST weekend the Tilapia Busters tournament was held at Robina and the numbers of the pest fish that the competitors caught were nothing short of staggering.

All up just more than 3000 were taken from our ecosystem, weighing an incredible half tonne.

Not only do these fish fight off native species for food and habitat, the lakes and estuaries they do inhabit they destroy with their burrowing and prolific breeding.

Forget about Tilapia breeding like rabbits, its more like rabbits breeding like Tilapia.

They have been introduced to our country somehow via Africa and are so difficult to control given they can live in both fresh and salt water.

Well done to everybody that took part – now bring on the next one.
