Knight racing all good in Newcastle

-

NEWCASTLE officially became a Supercars city yesterday with the Knights handing over the sporting keys to the one-team town.

In a blessing from Newcastle’s newest favourite son, Knights flyer Nathan Ross declared next week’s first Newcastle 500 a coup for the city.

DJR/Team Penske gun Scott McLaughlin and Red Bull Holden Racing Team record breaker Jamie Whincup will go toe-to-toe for the Supercars championship on the Newcastle street track, beginning with practice next Friday.

“This is extremely good for the city,’’ Ross said.

“It will be great for tourism and the locals. It will open up a lot of eyes to racing and I reckon people are going to fall in love with it. We are going to be done here and we are supporting the race.

“Coming down here and standing on the main drag you get a really good vibe. I am looking at where everyone will be in the stands and now I actually can’t wait.’’

Championship contender McLaughlin thanked the NRL team for giving them the green light to race through the streets of Newcastle.

“This is their home turf and it’s nice to get there support,’’ McLaughlin said.

“And I can’t wait for the race. What they have done with the track is first class.”
