Physio holds up jail stint
Lacey sentencing delayed over rehab concerns
NOTORIOUS Glitter Strip milk baron Ken Lacey has had a jail stint delayed after concerns he would be unable to access hydrotherapy pools and physiotherapy while in custody.
Lacey, who was yesterday expected to be sentenced over drug charges in the Southport District Court, had his matter adjourned until December after his defence team ex- plained he was recovering from two shoulder operations.
Crown prosecutor Judith Geary made an application to adjourn the matter so further medical information could be provided from Lacey’s doctors.
Lacey, 61, has pleaded guilty to supplying about 12 grams of cocaine as well as four other offences including possessing methylamphetamine.
He is likely to be sentenced to a term of imprisonment.
Defence barrister Sarah Thompson, instructed by Lisa Searing from Buckland Allen Criminal Lawyers, said Lacey had two stints of orthopedic surgery this year.
The court heard it was unclear whether physiotherapy ordered by his doctors as part of his rehabilitation could be provided in custody. Ms Thompson said he was also required to have hydrotherapy.
“I’m sure hydrotherapy isn’t available in custody,” Judge David Kent QC said.
The matter was adjourned until December so that Lacey could attend a follow-up appointment with his doctor to determine the extent of physiotherapy required. In the meantime, prosecutors will investigate the level of physio prisoners can access in jail.
Ms Searing said outside court Lacey may require further medical procedures should be he unable to be treated while in custody.
“Without access to ongoing treatment there is a risk he may require further surgery,” she said. “Mr Lacey wanted the matter to go ahead but we couldn’t confirm he could receive the treatment he needed in while in custody.”
Lacey has a follow-up consultation with doctors on November 30. The case was adjourned until December 7.
Lacey’s partner Arianne Stringer, 39, pleaded guilty to possessing dangerous drugs and scales and was yesterday ordered to serve 12 months’ probation. No conviction was recorded.
