BARNESY AT BROADWATER

ROCKING NEW SUMMER FESTIVAL FOR COAST

- SUZANNE SIMONOT suzanne.simonot@news.com.au

ROCK star turned best-selling author Jimmy Barnes will return to Broadwater Parklands to headline the Gold Coast leg of a new all-star outdoor summer music festival, to be announced today.

Barnes tops a one-off rollcall of Aussie rock greats for Under the Southern Stars, a new touring festival that plays the waterfront in Southport on February 10.

The festival’s 18-plus Coast stop will also star Barnes’ Cold Chisel bandmate Ian Moss, frontman par excellence Tex Perkins (The Cruel Sea, Beasts of Bourbon), guitar star Diesel, sounds of summer songsmith Richard Clapton, northern NSW roots rocker Ash Grunwald and local livewires The Rich and Famous.

“This is a bill I’m looking forward to being a part of. This show will definitely rock,” Barnes said.

“In the middle of summer, what would you want to do but get out with your mates and have a party?”

Under the Southern Stars is likely to include some special guest appearances and collaborations by its stars, most of who have recorded and toured together on many occasions throughout their careers.

“I think there will be a few surprises on the day,” Barnes said.

Two-time ARIA Hall of Fame inductee Barnes is at the peak of his powers after baring and sharing his heart and hurt in two confronting autobiographies – the award-winning, Working Class Boy and Working Class Man.

The debut of what could become a permanent new highlight on the Coast’s summer events calendar, Under the Southern Stars is being presented by One World Entertainment, the touring company helmed by veteran promoter and TSS old boy Andrew McManus.

The festival will bump into the same section of Broadwater Parklands Supercars Australia uses for its Gold Coast 600 race weekend concerts – including Cold Chisel’s unforgettable singalong for 18,500 fans in 2015.

Under the Southern Stars’ tour of Coastal locations will also stop in Forster Tuncurry, in NSW, and Mornington Peninsula, in Victoria, in January without Moss and Perkins, whose festival shows are exclusive to the Coast.

Under the Southern Stars plays Broadwater Parklands on February 10, with tickets on sale on Friday (Ticketmaster).
