Community groups work in many wondrous ways
COMMUNITY groups are grateful to the Bulletin for their comprehensive coverage of the election, and what it means for the Gold Coast.
If it were not for the GCB’s encouragement, we would not have gone to the trouble and expense of organising at very short notice a Meet the Candidates event.
The last two years have seen unprecedented activity and cooperation from community groups from Coomera to Coolangatta, all of whom work very hard to prevent the killing of the golden goose – our wonderful lifestyle here on the Coast.
The Meet the Candidates for the electorates of Bonney, Southport, Broadwater and Surfers Paradise, was very successful, despite the boycott by the LNP.
It was significant that community representatives such as Councillor Dawn Crichlow made the effort to attend – as well as people of all political persuasions.
The idea that the only people who get involved in community organisations are lefty Greenies is a myth.
No matter what the ultimate outcome of the State election, I hope others will be inspired to get involved in their local community organisation. In areas where no formal community group currently exists, the only way to prevent inappropriate overdevelopment on your patch is to get together with your neighbours and local businesses and get involved.
A side benefit is you will meet great people from all walks of life.
