YORKSHIRE HEARTLAND

-

IF IT were a nation, the northern English county of Yorkshire would have finished in the top 20 at the Rio 2016 and London 2012 Olympic Games.

Heading into next year’s Commonwealth Games, the county will dominate England’s triathlon team with four of its six able-bodied athletes from the Yorkshire city of Leeds.

Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee and his Olympic medallist brother Jonathan headline the Yorkshire list alongside fellow Leeds triathletes Tom Bishop and Jess Learmonth.

Alistair said he was honoured to represent Team England at the Commonwealth Games.

“I have had the chance to compete at the Commonwealth Games once before and it’s a big deal for a niche sport like triathlon to compete in a global sporting competition like this,” he said. “The Commonwealth Games has always meant a lot to me and I am motivated to race for England in a place which is a real heartland of the sport.”
