New hosts locked in for Games
BIRMINGHAM has been confirmed as the host city of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, bringing the multisport event to England for the first time since Manchester hosted the 2002 Games.
Louise Martin, president of the Commonwealth Games Federation, made the official announcement at a press conference at the Arena Academy in the city on Thursday morning.
Birmingham’s bid had initially been deemed “non-compliant” by the Commonwealth Games Federation in October, but the necessary assurances over the financial backing and land for a proposed athletes’ village have now been given.
