BIG miners like BHP dream of unlimited profits in Green-topia – when we all drive electric vehicles charged by non-coal electricity.

Imagine the metals and energy needed to build all those electric motors, batteries, charging stations, power leads, transmission lines, wind towers, solar farms, generators, transformers, gas pipelines and back-up power stations.

Demand and prices for copper, aluminium, nickel, cobalt, lithium, rare earths, lead, titanium, silicon, uranium, steel, coking coal and gas will soar.

No wonder BHP, the Big Australian miner who produces many of these commodities, has conveniently joined the war on thermal coal and now wears garish green lipstick.

ACCORDING to Google, the Sydney NYE fireworks dumped 8 tonnes

of rubbish into the Sydney Harbour. The fine for that kind of disposal is $250,000 and a 7 year jail term if I had done that. Is anybody going to claim responsibility for this?

And in Melbourne, there were 14 tonnes of rubbish spread over the city due to the act of firing the explosives from the top of high-rise city buildings. There would have been rubbish throughout the city, and the ratepayers would cop the clean-up, apart from the cost of the fireworks. I hangs me head in disbelief !

GREAT to see new water stations in parks. Please can shopping centres follow and put water stations in as well – we are trying to stop people buying less plastic so shopping centres please put in water stations.

TO STATE that 80 per cent of pupils in a survey said they have never used drugs is a lot like 80 per cent of drivers saying they have never broken the speed limit. These so-called surveys will help no one and stating that reporting the truth will do more harm than good is a nonsense.

ROD WATSON, SURFERS PARADISE

WHAT about the light rail having one car at the end (or another spot) on each tram with a double level clear carriage for the patrons to enjoy the beautiful Gold Coast view en route? Surfers Paradise would be a real highlight! This would be even better when it goes to the airport. Goldlink could charge more for those passengers.

COMMISERATIONS to the bloke who’s lost a bit of power and thrust in the boudoir department due to a workplace accident.

If it’s any consolation, the longer you go without it, the less you will miss it. Life becomes more tranquil.
