TALK about a super-size grandstand.

Work is under way to prepare the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre for an influx of spectators ahead of April’s Commonwealth Games.

A massive grandstand is being erected overlooking the centre , which will provide some of the 10,000 seats available for swimming events. There will be a further 2500 seats for diving events.

It is all part of a huge temporary structure construction drive that started in the New Year. All up, 60,000 temporary seats will be made available across all venues. to meet demand from more than 1.5 million spectators expected at the Games. There will be 1000 temporary structures comprising 400 tents, hundreds of containers and 500 temporary amenities such as toilets.

That includes more than 300 at the Athletes Village, much of which is visible from the Smith St Motorway.

Work starts today on the beach volleyball venue at Queen Elizabeth Park in Coolangatta while the athletics track has been laid at Carrara Stadium.

Gold Coasters will need to get used to the Aquatic Centre being closed to the public for some time. It closes on February 10 and doesn’t reopen until June 4.
