WOMEN A FORCE IN PLQ

- with Brett Wilkie

ANEW season of Premier League Queensland kicked off last weekend with two rounds and, apart from a couple of upsets, I thought the highlight was the number of women competing among the 12 clubs. There used to be a time when women playing against men was rare but on Saturday and Sunday there were at least 10 going around with the PLQ sides.

At my club Helensvale, we had internationals Lynsey Clarke and Kelsey Cottrell but Tweed Heads topped that with four – Chloe Stewart, Jessica Srisamruaybai, Kristy Thatcher and Lauren Wilson, who are all Queensland squad members.

And from all accounts they all went well.

Looking at the first two rounds of PLQ it is obvious Hamilton Power are going to be hard to beat.

The Power have lured Aaron Teys and Jeremy Henry from Warilla and world singles champion, Kiwi Shannon McIroy, has also joined them.

Hamilton won both of their weekend games and dropped just half a point from a drawn rink.

Helensvale and champions Broadbeach Bulls also went unbeaten over the weekend.

IF you have Friday night spare then get along to Helensvale for the 2017 PLQ

final rematch between the Hawks and Broadbeach.

Unfortunately, myself and Kelsey Cottrell will miss the big clash because we’ll be away playing for Australia in the Burnside Pairs in New Zealand.

I’m representing with Aaron Wilson and Kelsey is with Karen Murphy.

These will be the pairs combinations selected for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

A NUMBER of Gold Coast youngsters are expected to do well in the Queensland junior titles which are being played in Bundaberg and starting on Saturday.

Past winners Jessie Cottell (Broadbeach) and Shane White (Helensvale) both have strong chances of adding to previous title successes.

Unfortunately, rising Tweed Heads star Jessica Srisamruaybai is ineligible for the junior titles this year because she turns 18 during the carnival.
