Thong ‘stuck under accelerator’ before crash

- KATE PARASKEVOS

A DRIVER came within metres of crashing through a Surfers Paradise mansion when he crashed his luxury car in a usually quiet residential street.

The white Mercedes clipped a fence on Commodore Dr about 1pm yesterday, before driving over a potted plant and driveway, coming to a stop less than a metre away from the home’s entry. No one was home at the time of the crash.

Housesitter Nina Arama said she got a call from a neighbour to alert her.

“It’s my aunty and uncle’s house, so this has all happened while they’re on holidays,” she said.

“I had to race home and check if everyone was all right. Luckily no one was hurt, we usually park right where it happened so it could have been much worse.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said he spoke to the driver of the car who told him his thong got stuck under the accelerator, before ploughing into the yard and driveway.

“I’m just glad he didn’t hit our car,” he said.

A police spokesman said police were not tasked to the job as no one was injured.
