Cam’s future fight

- SAM LANDSBERGER

CAMERON White wants to lock down the crucial No.3 spot for Australia but has been given no guarantees he will play in the final two one-day international matches against England.

White, 34, scored 17 off 25 balls in his first crack at the SCG on Sunday after captain Steve Smith demoted himself to No.4.

“I think No.3 suits me,” White said ahead of the next game in Adelaide on Friday.

“I’ve batted there for Australia before and made 100s there before.”

Australia’s top order has been unsettled ever since Michael Clarke’s retirement after the 2015 World Cup win.

But White was confident he was the man Australia could bank on to control an innings.

“It’s a good spot, and if that’s the role I can do for the team that’d be great,” he said.

“I’ve batted at the top of the order for Victoria the last few years as well. I enjoy the ball coming on to the bat early.

“But I’m a couple of games in now and I’m not stupid, I’ve probably got to really make the most of my next opportunity, if I get one.

“That’s where it is. The ball’s in my court and I need to do something.”

White has not given any thought to next year’s World Cup and said he was treating every innings like his last.

“It’s a bit like (how) I’ve played for Victoria over the last couple of years: you just try to play every game like it’s your last and make the most of it,” White said.

“One thing I’ve said to a few people around the team is I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself, but it’s hard not to.

“Being realistic it’s only going to be a short window to do something.”

White has made 302 runs for Melbourne Renegades, the fourth most scored in this Big Bash season.

He is due to fly to Adelaide today to rejoin Australia’s ODI squad after captaining the Gades on Monday night.
