Former Fink jailed for taking $32k from clients
FORMER Finks bikie club treasurer Jacob Stanes defrauded thousands from two clients while he was director of bogus financial investment company Keystone Finance, a court heard yesterday.
Stanes, 24, pleaded guilty in Southport District Court to fraud, robbery and receiving tainted property.
Crown prosecutor Michael Mitchell told the court Stanes received $150,000 from two clients in November 2015 with the expectation the money would be invested.
Instead Stanes transferred $32,000 to his girlfriend’s account in early December.
Mr Mitchell said the Bank of Queensland noticed the suspicious activity and contacted police. Holds were placed on the accounts and police conducted a raid on Stanes home.
Mr Mitchell said they found $12,800 in Stanes home, while $18,000 remained unaccounted for.
In a separate incident, Mr Mitchell said on May 1, 2016, Stanes and two other men approached a man on Cavill Ave, Surfers Paradise and demanded money. “The complainant thought he was joking and tried to walk away,” he said.
Mr Mitchell said Stanes then blocked the man’s path.
“Stanes said, ‘These guys behind you will help me put you down’,” he said.
The man handed Stanes $150 in cash and went to police as soon as Stanes had left.
Defence barrister Sam Di Carlo said at the time Stanes, who had only completely Year 8, had been taken advantage of by people who had installed him as director of the company.
He pointed to a doctor’s report which showed Stanes had a “lack of calibration of his moral compass”.
The court heard Stanes has a criminal history in three states – Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
Judge Catherine Muir sentenced Stanes to two years jail for the fraud to be released on parole on July 5.
She sentenced him to 12 months prison for the robbery which she wholly suspended for two years. Stanes has been in custody since December 11.
