The Gold Coast Bulletin

SHOW AND TELL

-

CITY councillors are following the Bulletin’s lead in considering the future of the Gold Coast Show. This includes our support for a relocation, if that is what it takes to help the iconic event survive.

The Bulletin declared on Saturday that discussion and action had to happen quickly, because the show is dying. We urged all involved to consider the lessons of the ill-advised shift from Parklands to the turf club, initiated by the state government so Parklands could be used for the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village.

We urged stakeholders to note the success of the small show at Mudgeeraba, and how it still taps into what both rural and city residents want in such an event. Indeed, we backed a potential move of the Gold Coast Show to Mudgeeraba. Drastic changes are needed.

As the saying goes, a new broom. Public focus must also settle now on Black Swan Lake, where work is underway to fill the so-called “borrow pit’’.

If there is no show there, and that seems most likely, will the turf club now have to pay for use of that land?
