Flori in call for inquiry

- JEREMY PIERCE AND PATRICK BULLINGS

WHISTLEBLOWER Rick Flori has backed calls for an independent inquiry into the Queensland Police Service discipline process and wants Commissioner Ian Stewart to resign.

Mr Flori, who was this week acquitted of misconduct charges for leaking video footage of police bashing a prisoner in Surfers Paradise Police Station in 2012, supported calls yesterday from civil liberties crusader Terry O’Gorman for an independent inquiry into the whole investigation.

He also said he would consider rejoining the police service, but only as commissioner.

“This is a moment in history,” Mr Flori said. “I would fully support any inquiry and would welcome a position to oversee the investigation. There needs to be a broom through the whole police review process.”

A spokesman for Ms Palaszczuk said there were no plans for an inquiry at this stage.

Commissioner Stewart remained supportive of the decision to pursue Mr Flori through the courts.

“None of us are above the law,” he said. “Two judges felt Mr Flori had a case to answer at his committal and then at his trial.

“It must be remembered Mr Flori was subject to the normal processes that any member would be under the same circumstances

“I would be naive if I didn’t think there are those in the public who have a very strong view about what has occurred in the matter.

“All can I say is that to my knowledge proper process was followed throughout.”
