Wrights make Roar seething Marco staves event history over ref calls off tyre saga

-

TYLER and Mikey Wright have created history by becoming the first siblings to compete in World Surf League Qualifying Series finals at the same event.

Small, grim conditions at Newcastle Surfest QS6000 were outdone by the achievements of the pair, with Mikey joining sister and 2010 winner Kirby on the trophy after downing Barron Mamiya in the men’s decider.

World champion Tyler, though, was beaten by Hawaii’s Coco Ho in the women’s final. ROAR managing director David Pourre has blasted Football Federation Australia and A-League referees as the fallout from Brisbane’s controversial 1-0 weekend loss to Newcastle Jets continues.

Frustrated Brisbane coach John Aloisi took aim at referee Stephen Lucas and assistant referee Ashley Beecham immediately after Saturday’s defeat over two potentially match-turning decisions.

The first was when Beecham raised his flag to rule an off-side. TYRE troubles provided a race of organised chaos and ultimately backto-back victories for Italian Marco Melandri in the World Superbike championship at Phillip Island.

The Ducati star emerged from the opening round with maximum points, grabbing his second win by a less than a wheel length from defending champion Jonathan Rea who was dogged by mechanical and physical woes.

Concerns over the Pirelli race rubber lasting the distance prompted a compulsory pitstop for Race 2.
