Mayor should accelerate process of filling controversial Bundall lake

- RON NIGHTINGALE, BIGGERA WATERS

THIS situation with the lake and the protesters has now become an incredible farce.

We have just been through a rain event which has seen the Gold Coast drenched, many drains blocking up and roads and backyards covered in water.

As expected the rain caused run-off from the stables surrounding the lake and water carrying horse urine, manure and old feed to wash into the borrow hole.

As expected this has lifted the levels of toxic materials and rotting grain to even higher levels and when the weather clears this will produce algae blooms, as it does every season.

And yet these so-called defenders of the wildlife have such care for the wildlife they wish to expose it to that now very toxic mixture.

Then there are their most recent complaints against the Turf Club. The turf club is a non-profit organisation (not like the TAB Qld) whose sole purpose is to administer the maintenance and care of the facilities just like the committee that oversees a Junior Football Club’s requirements for our children. Yet these people are making such a stink over a stinking water-filled hole their demands, if granted, could see all not-for-profit sporting clubs having to raise extensive amounts of money to pay rates on land.

And the bird that got stuck and still managed to get out of its own predicament? I doubt that there is not a person who has either had a near miss or run over one of these “water chickens” during their daily lives at some time. At some time we all have come across a dead bird at a building site of a house or at other works or even in our back yards when we have done the normal like killing weeds or just watering in the chemicals to feed our grass.

I believe the Mayor needs to ask the turf club to accelerate the filling in of this hole and to increase security around the fences to prevent people accessing the work site.
