Sprinter at crossroads over starts

-

GLAMOUR sprinter Chautauqua’s celebrated race career is at the crossroads after he refused to jump away with the field again in a barrier trial at Rosehill yesterday.

It’s the third time Chautauqua has missed the start in a barrier trial this preparation, prompting Team Hawkes to send the sprinter to Melbourne, hoping a change of scenery may solve the gelding’s barrier problems.

The “Grey Flash” is known to have a quirky nature around the stables but his barrier issues are out of character.

Hall of Famer John Hawkes, who co-trains in partnership with his sons Michael and Wayne, is a wonderful horseman, but the frustrating Chautauqua saga is becoming a real head-scratcher. Hawkes confirmed Chautauqua would be sent to Melbourne.

Chautauqua must trial twice to stewards’ satisfaction in a jumpout and official barrier trial before he can race again.

Team Hawkes is hoping to have Chautauqua ready to resume in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on March 24.
