Perfection chasers

QUEENSLAND’S under-18 women’s hockey side have been hailed better than last year’s unbeaten squad, as the state next week shoots for a fifth straight national crown.

An unprecedented winning streak can be set when the Australian Championships run in Launceston from Tuesday through to Wednesday, March 21.

The squad of 18, featuring eight Gold or Tweed Coast players, headed into a training camp this week in preparation for their attempt at history.

Manager Kelly Moore said it was an amazing opportunity for the Sparks squad.

“Last year’s group went through the tournament undefeated, which was amazing in itself, but to be honest I think this year’s group is even more talented,” she said.

“I have watched some of these girls grow in to the talented players they are now for the past three years.

“If we put it all together in each game and utilise the talents of every single player in our team, honestly it will be difficult for other states to get near us again.”

Lisa Morgan has coached the past four successful campaigns and Moore hailed her foresight, instinctive game plans and dedication.

“Lisa is an amazing coach, I have watched her coach women, men, boys and girls of all ages and she knows exactly what’s is needed to get the best out of each and every group,” she said.

“The girls love her, she encourages the best from them by instilling this amazing belief in their abilities.”

Last year’s group included Sophie Conway, a rising star for the Brisbane Lions in the 2018 AFLW.

“Soph absolutely loved the Sparkies and everything it stood for,” Moore said.

“The girls love the history and we build on the positivity from past successes.

“To be honest, it’s a bit like our State of Origin boys; we get around each other, we only have positive stuff to say and when the chips are down we keep fighting for our mates until the final hooter goes. Win, draw or lose, we do it together.”
