Tyro Fotuaika wows in Seagulls loss

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

TEEN Titan Moeaki Fotuaika made a statement in Tweed Heads’ 24-12 Intrust Super Cup loss to Norths at Bishop Park yesterday.

The talented prop did not disappoint in his senior rugby league debut, matching up well against a Devils pack spearheaded by veteran Sam Taga- taese. The Broncos recruit has 168 NRL games to his name including a Cronulla title plus four Tests for Samoa but that proved no worry for Fotuaika.

“I thought he did a really good job,” said Seagulls coach Ben Woolf.

“He didn’t look out of place at all. He carried the ball strong, he played big minutes.

“For a young kid I thought he did a really good job in his first time against men.”

The scoreline was made to look worse than it could have been; in reality it was four tries to three but Norths converted at 100 per cent whereas Tweed missed every shot at goal.

“It was really positive from our guys,” Woolf said.

“We have got a young group in and we have just got a couple of blokes back from the Titans as well, one being AJ (Brimson) in the halves so our combinations were always expected to take time.”

Backs Tevita Folau, Kiah Cooper and Brayden McGrady crossed for the Seagulls. Hiale Roycroft and Sam Meskell both left the field for head injury assessments but later returned.
