SURFERS SCULPTURE NEW STAR ATTRACTION

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

IT’S the piece of artwork being touted as the place to take selfies during the Commonwealth Games.

And it’s just a fraction of the price when compared to the Gold Coast’s latest controversial $2 million street light installation.

The shiny red piece of artwork, located at Surfers Paradise foreshore, comes with a $366,275 price tag – but it has already found favour with tourists and locals.

Brazilian tourists Thaisa Supioni and Katharina Borges Schriefer were swallowed under its huge starlike legs earlier this week, while other tourists were spotted taking photos of it.

“I can already see that it’s the perfect place for visitors and athletes to snap a pic of themselves to take home as a memory from their adventure on the Gold Coast,” Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said.

“You can also stand in the middle of it and get some great artistic shots.

“This artwork is quintessential Gold Coast – big, bright and bold.”

The nine-metre piece, dubbed “All Eyes on Us – The Commonwealth star”, was designed by Western Australian artist Stuart Green.

“This starlike sculpture reflects the colours, bursting form and vitality of tropical flowers, along with surfboards which symbolise the vibrant and youthful coastal culture, “Mr Green said

Funded by Gold Coast City Council and the Office of the Commonwealth Games, the artwork will stay in Surfers Paradise for six months before being permanently relocated elsewhere on the Coast.
