I’VE DREAMED OF THIS SINCE I WAS SIX, SAYS GYMNAST

- FIONA PURDON

BRISBANE gymnast Rianna Mizzen is excited that she has finally arrived at the glamorous Gold Coast destination of her long-time Commonwealth Games goal.

“I’ve had this dream since I started gymnastics when I was six years old so my dream is 12 years old,’’ Mizzen said. “When I was little I watched on television everyone achieving their goals at the Games and I wanted to do that.’’

Mizzen, 18, is the youngest member of the five-strong women’s gymnastics team which includes Victorianbased duo Emily Whitehead and Alexandra Eade and Queensland teammates Georgia Godwin and Georgia-Rose Brown.

“We have a great team spirit, with us three Queenslanders and Alex and Emily,’’ said Mizzen, who trains at the Queensland Centre of Excellence at Chandler.

Mizzen started her gymnastics at Logan PCYC just a few kilometres down the M1 from the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre, where she will be competing in the team final on Friday. She is also hoping to qualify for the uneven bars final on Sunday.

“I’m really hoping we can get into the top three in the team final and personally I’m hoping to get into the bars final. It would be wonderful to win a team medal in front of a home crowd,’’ Mizzen said. “I want to hit my routines and be confident. I have the hardest and most technical bars routine in Australia. If I hit my routine, anything is possible.’’
