Seahawks not poaching from Games

THE Seahawks have pulled the pin on a potential Commonwealth Games talent raid, despite the sensational sacking of import Walter Pitchford.

North Gold Coast’s QBL side dismissed the US recruit just months after signing him, claiming he didn’t fit the club’s culture. “We’re too small of a club – we’re just a family club,” coach Ricardo Lawyer said.

“He was playing really well (in the pre-season trials), but he didn’t fit in and wasn’t a very good team man.

“He wasn’t engaging with the boys and it would have been a really long season.”

While Pitchford’s exit could have opened a spot on the rosguys ter for the first-year franchise, Lawyer has backed down plans to raid the Games for talent.

The football World Cup has a knack of unearthing cheap, little-known talent, a trend Lawyer had initially hoped to continue in basketball.

“We looked at a couple of (who were playing),” he said. “There are a lot of good talents but we worked out we’d have to go without.”

Lawyer predicted New Zealand to challenge Australia at the Games, while lamenting the loss of Canada’s NBA crew.

The Seahawks, meanwhile, lost 91-89 to Ipswich (Jerron Jamerson 30 points) in Wednesday night’s trial.
