THEY’RE GOOD SPORTS BAR NONE

- DENISE RAWARD

WHILE Gold Coast bars dedicated to live sport may have been buzzing during the Commonwealth Games, there’s one not far from Carrara Stadium where not much has changed.

The Back Page in Market St, Carrara, was a sports bar probably before the term was even coined, thanks mainly to its fine collection of memorabilia. It doesn’t have Foxtel, betting facilities or pokies and that’s the way proprietor Mick Young likes it. When approached to be part of the Bulletin’s search for the best sports bars, Mr Young was sceptical, saying he didn’t want too many ‘outsiders’ coming in. “It’s a locals’ place. So we’ll just leave it at that, hey,” he said.

Elsewhere, sports bars have moved on, boasting multiple monster flat screens, global broadcasting technology and onsite betting. After the Games, the bars will go back to footy, the horses and live fights, while also coming up is the FA Cup final, the FIFA World Cup, the Tour de France and Wimbledon. In anticipation, we’ve found the Coast’s best sports bars. For the rundown, see tomorrow’s Gold Coast Eye.
