GAILO Chop and Humidor could be given the chance to compete in a Winx-free environment in Brisbane next month after trailing the champion home in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick.
Gailo Chop continued an excellent preparation with a courageous frontrunning second to the wonder mare, while Humidor finished stoutly for fourth.
Trainer Darren Weir said Gailo Chop, who has won $1.75 million from six starts this autumn, might tackle the weight-for-age Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 19.
Humidor is also being considered for a trip north.
“The Doomben Cup might be options for them because it’s a weight-for-age, 2000m race,” Weir said.
“One will head up, the other will head to the paddock.”
Weir said both Gailo Chop and Humidor had run well, albeit overshadowed by Winx.
“Both horses had their chances and both weren’t good enough, obviously,” he said.
“I thought Gailo Chop ran very brave, makes his own luck on speed and that’s about as good as he can go.
“Humidor, I thought he might have charged a little bit better late. He sort of looked a little bit one-paced late.”
Fellow Victorian trainer David Hayes will monitor the recovery of Futooh and Muswellbrook, first and second in the Fernhill Handicap at Randwick, ahead of a possible back-up in Saturday’s Group I Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
“If they eat up they’ll run,” Hayes said.
