OARSOME CREW WILL FACE WORLD

- CONNOR O’BRIEN @obrien_GCB

A FLEET of Griffith University Surfers Paradise Rowing Club athletes have been rewarded for successful nationals championships with selection for Australia.

Seven of the club’s rowers bagged medals at last month’s titles in Sydney, with six this week confirmed to represent their country. Lining up in the World Rowing Junior Championships in August in the Czech Republic will be Cormac Kennedy-Leverett (men’s single), Jess Scott, Leukie Smith, Phoebe Robinson and Hilary Ballinger (all women’s four).

Alexandra Finlay has also been picked for the Australia under-21 team to face New Zealand in the 2018 Trans-Tasman Regatta in Sydney on June 28-30 and in Lake Karapiro on August 23-25.

Jackson Free, son of World Cup medallist Marcus and nephew of Olympic gold medallist Duncan, was the unlucky one to miss out on selection despite collecting four medals at nationals.

Capping the overall good news for Griffith, Marcus Free was selected as men’s single coach.

St Hilda’s mentor Sean Carolan will work with the women’s four team.

“We are very fortunate to be able to train in a great location here on the Gold Coast and look forward to some big sessions over our winter before heading to the European summer,” Marcus said.
