Isaac extending proud Lucas legacy

JUNIOR Wallabies star Isaac Lucas is relishing the chance to contribute to his family’s proud rugby legacy as the Australians prepare to step up their Oceania U20s campaign at Robina today.

With older brothers Tom (Australian sevens), Matt (ACT Brumbies) and Ben (Queensland Reds) all plying their trade professionally, Isaac underlined his potential with a try in Australia’s 51-5 thrashing of Fiji in the tournament opener on Friday night.

His assignment now is to back up that form against Tonga, who were humbled 97-0 by New Zealand, in their 5pm battle at Bond University.

“It’s a privilege to put on the gold jersey and me and my brothers don’t take it lightly. I think there was a large grocery bill when we were all in our teens,” the 19-year-old centre said with a laugh.

“I think it was a good solid first performance but there’s a lot to work on, especially from a backs’ perspective just pulling some width and some (communication) in the backline.

“I thoroughly enjoyed (Friday’s game). It’s a bit of a step up from club rugby with Sunnybank but I’m looking forward to the rest of the tournament.”

New Zealand will take on Fiji at 3pm today. Australia’s final game is against New Zealand on Saturday.
