M1 decision in weeks

THE State Government could decide by the end of this month whether it will permanently reduce the speed limit on the M1.

Sections of the motorway operated under the reduced limits during the Commonwealth Games, however speeds reverted to normal on April 17.

The Transport Department is reviewing how effective the reduced limits and other traffic management initiatives for the Games were at improving safety and traffic.

Department officials are also close to finishing a 12month analysis of a trial that restricted trucks to the two left lanes of the M1. That report is due to be completed in July.
