Calvin Klein bikie could hold baby for first time

- CAMPBELL GELLIE

FORMER Lone Wolf bikie Garry James Brush, who was caught by police on a Varsity Lakes rooftop in just his underwear, could be out of jail and holding his baby for the first time in just three months.

The 30-year-old was sentenced to a further 12 months jail in Tweed Local Court on Wednesday for the initial police pursuit that ended with him eventually being caught in Queensland in just his Calvin Klein undies.

Appearing via video link, Brush cut a very different figure to the day of his arrest, clean shaven and looking smart in a round neck jumper. He pleaded guilty to charges of failing to stop and of driving recklessly.

His lawyer Michael Gatenby said at the time of the police pursuit, May 5, 2016, Brush’s girlfriend was pregnant.

Brush was aware Queensland Police had a warrant out for him for breaching his parole and knew that if he was caught he would not see the birth of his child, he said.

“For whatever reason he has not been able to hold his child,” Mr Gatenby said.

It was his desire to escape the police so that he could see his baby that had him evading police on the road, through gardens, over dirt, bushland and finally water at Kingscliff.

About 12.30pm police patrolling Kingscliff passed Brush and a passenger in the car heading in the opposite direction on Viking St.

Police followed the Holden Commodore Brush was driving when the pursuit began.

Brush was eventually finally caught by Queensland Police on a Varsity Lakes rooftop on January 18, 2017.

Magistrate Geoff Dunlevy said Brush had distanced himself from bad influences in his life and “genuinely wanted to turn his life around”.

He was sentenced to 12 months jail with a three-month non-parole period and could be out of prison on July 9.
