McGRATH WORKS HARD FOR HIS TWO GOLD AT WORLD CUP

-

PARALYMPIC champion Curtis McGrath has finished the Paracanoe World Cup in Hungary with two gold medals despite being pushed all the way in both events.

Gold Coaster McGrath won both the kayak and va’a canoe divisions at the World Cup in Szeged, Hungary, but had to dig deep for the wins after battling for his usual peak fitness.

McGrath, who was on commentating duties for Channel 7 at the recent Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, was pushed to the line by Uzbekistan’s Khaytmurot Sherkuziev in the VL3 final on Saturday after having to hold off Kiwi Scott Martlew in the KL2 decider the previous day.

“I’m feeling good, but a bit more training would help,” said McGrath, who took up the sport after losing both legs when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while serving in Afghanistan in 2012.

“I think due to my preparation leading in I had to be content that I wasn’t going to perform as well as I wanted to.”

In other results from the championships on Saturday, Gold Coast paddler Susan Seipel followed her bronze medal in the women’s VL2 with a close fourth in the KL2.
