Accused is camera shy

AN ELDERLY man caught on video allegedly groping a woman at Main Beach has tried to dodge cameras after his first appearance in court.

The 78-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared briefly in Southport Magistrates Court yesterday to face one charge of sexual assault.

Duty lawyer Mollie Roper asked for an adjournment so the man could apply for Legal Aid assistance. The man tried to dodge the Bulletin and TV cameras as he left court.

It is alleged the man grabbed the woman’s chest while speaking to her two-year-old child on July 14. He also allegedly tried to give the child $20.

The man is set to next appear in court on July 24.
