Solo sailor Bullimore loses cancer battle

-

SOLO sailor Tony Bullimore, famous for surviving four days in his capsized boat, has died aged 79.

Mr Bullimore battled freezing temperatures when disaster struck during the Vendee Globe race in 1997. He was feared drowned in the Southern Ocean until his yacht, the Global Exide Challenger, was spotted by the crew of the Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Adelaide. He created a makeshift hammock inside his cabin and existed on chocolate and water.

The Bristol-born adventurer died from pelvic cancer.

Nephew Steven Mulvaney, 63, paid tribute yesterday. “He was a bit like Marmite – people either loved him or hated him, but they all respected him.”
