VIKINGS STRIKE AS QUEENSLAND DOMINATE IN THE POOL
IT was a Queensland affair at the National Pool Championships, with the Queensland Cyclones winning the interstates, Currumbin Vikings taking the opens and Tweed Heads and Coolangatta claiming glory in the masters. In an upset at the interstates, Queensland retained the Allan Whelpton Shield on pointscore ahead of Western Australia and NSW.
In the open division in Adelaide, the Vikings claimed first place on 441 points, followed by Maroochydore on 333 and Terrigal rounding up third place with 218 points.
The masters crown was claimed by Tweed Heads and Coolangatta SLSC with 156 points. South Australia’s West Beach came in second only a point behind, with Terrigal SLSC in third.
Queensland sport manager Stuart Hogben hailed it as amazing that all categories were taken out by Queensland clubs and the Queensland team. The overall success helped the state to retain the Alan Whelpton Trophy.
It’s always a good tight competition between Queensland and NSW but this year Western Australian really threw down the gauntlet.
Eyes will now turn to the World Lifesaving Titles in Adelaide this November.
